UM's Code of Conduct, in Article V Section F, prohibits "unauthorized possession of dangerous chemicals". There is no exemption for pepper spray. The housing policy separately authorizes pepper spray in the dorms. In effect, students could be charged with conduct violations for merely carrying pepper spray for self-defense. Even if they generally are not, this forces students to decide whether or not their safety is worth gambling the future of their education. At a college with a history of sexual assaults, and where a student recently had to deploy pepper spray against a man with a knife at Dornblaser field, students should be confident in their ability to carry pepper spray for self-defense. By adding your name, you are saying: I believe the Code of Conduct should expressly exempt pepper spray from the weapons ban, and allow its possession anywhere it does not pose a particular threat. I demand that UM change this policy immediately.
